Down the Rabbit Hole: My Sim Racing Upgrade Journey

P1R Racing sim rig setup July 2024

While I loved my Logitech G920, I was still deep in the world of assists. This became my biggest roadblock in the search for faster lap times. And, like many before me, I tried to spend my way out of bad habits.

This became painfully clear at a Cars and Coffee meet. They had a rig with a belt-driven Fanatec base set up. With no assists enabled, I was okay, but I wasn’t fast. You don’t ask for assists on a public rig—that’s like asking for guide rails at a bowling alley. It’s an unwritten rule.

First, I delved into the world of direct drive and purchased the Fanatec CSL DD. The feedback was so intuitive that I found time almost immediately. That just snowballed. I bought the load cell brake. Then the throttle upgrade kit. My wife, enabling my ridiculously expensive hobby, then bought me the Playseat Trophy to reduce the flex from my old seat. Then came a new curved gaming monitor for higher refresh rates.

Whether it was the gear or a placebo, I was getting quicker and more consistent. The rig was evolving, and so was my driving.
